Thomas Hoffmann

Dr Thomas Hoffmann lives in Baden-Württemberg, the southwestern state of Germany, and works as Head of Geography Department at the Teacher Training Center Karlsruhe, where he trains pre-service geography teachers for secondary schools (Gymnasium). Beside this, he is Honorary Professor for Education for Sustainable Development at Leuphana University in Lüneburg as well as Lecturer for Geography Didactics at Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT). Thomas also teaches geography, history, political sciences and economy at Windeck-Gymnasium in Bühl next to the Black Forest. With his interest in global challenges for several decades, he started to deal with ideas of education for sustainable development and global learning right from the beginning of the discussion in the 1990s. He has introduced these ideas into numerous geo-didactic articles as well as geography textbooks. Thomas is one of the founding members of the ESD Expert Net, an intercultural think tank on ESD, in which he heads the working group on the development of learning and teaching material. The combination of these experiences results in the insight that a profound competence in systems thinking is the core of contemporary education to enable citizens of all ages to understand the earth system and to contribute to the cross societal process towards a sustainable future.
