Education in Plural Societies: Conflict and Comparison

Open to postgraduate research students in UK and Ireland.

Questions about the role of education in plural societies are as current as ever. This is not least in societies which have experienced violent conflict and are divided along ethnic, religious or socio-political lines. Research on the relationship between education and conflict is growing rapidly. However, research that focuses on inter-jurisdiction comparisons is still relatively thin. This conference will focus on conflict and comparison in the context of education in plural societies, helping to highlight fresh and emerging perspectives on the area.

Venue, Travel and Accommodation

Venue: The conference will be held at Queens Students Union on University Road, BT7 1NF.  http://www.qubsu.org/YourUnion/WhereWeAre/

Travel: If you plan to fly to Belfast, there are two airports you can use: Belfast City Airport and Belfast International Airport. Belfast City is the closest to the city centre and is connected to the city by bus and train (10-15 minute journey). The airlines Flybe, Aer Lingus and British Airways fly here. Belfast International Airport is outside of the city, and takes about 40 minutes to reach by bus from the city centre. Easyjet and Jet2, among other airlines, fly here. If you plan to take the train to the conference, the closest train station is Botanic. Queen’s University is 10 minutes walk from this station. If you come by bus, the closest large bus station is Europa Bus Station. Queen’s University is 25 minutes walk from here. There are also local buses that take you right up to Queen’s from the city centre. Take bus 8a or 8b.

Accommodation: There are many hostels, bed and breakfasts and hotels in the Queen’s University area. We recommend using online booking facilities to find the best prices – try www.booking.com and search for ‘Belfast’. You have a choice of hostels from £11 per night for a dormitory room with breakfast at Lagan Backpackers;£32 B&B accommodation somewhere like Botanic Rest;£30-35 hotel accommodation at the Etap Hotel;or £70 for bed and breakfast at the Ibis Hotel. All of these places are within 15 minutes of Queen’s University.
