Compare 50th Anniversary – Call for Proposals

Compare 50th Anniversary

Call for Proposals

A retrospective study of the journal Compare, 1970-2020

Compare journal coverIn 2020, the journal Compare will celebrate its 50th anniversary. To commemorate the event, the British Association of International and Comparative Education (BAICE) is commissioning a study providing a retrospective of the journal since its founding in 1970. The study will analyse the articles published in the journal over the last 50 years, assessing the trends and changes in terms of subject matter, country focus, methodology and authorship, amongst other aspects.

The study will be important for BAICE as a celebration of the journal, but will also make a scientific contribution, as part of debates about the changing nature of the field of comparative and international education. The study can also look forward to assess new challenges and prospects in the coming years. Researchers can propose their own approach to the review, involving quantitative and/or qualitative methods, but it is assumed that it will involve a detailed assessment of articles appearing in the journal across the full course of its existence.

BAICE is making the sum of £5000 available on the basis of a tender for the conducting of this study. We welcome proposals from researchers based in any country. It is expected that the study will be carried out by a lead researcher, supported by an associate researcher. (It is not essential that the associate researcher should be named on the initial bid). It will be a desk study, and will not involve empirical data collection or fieldwork.

Submissions must contain the following elements:

  • A proposal (approx. 1000 words) outlining the aims and design of the study
  • A simple budget outlining how the funds will be spent
  • CVs of any named applicants

The study will be published in Compare in 2020, subject to the normal review process. Representatives of BAICE / Compare will function as an advisory board to review the output and provide feedback.

As preparation for the submission, we recommend candidates read the special issue published on the 40th anniversary of the journal, outlining the history until 2010. In particular:

Evans, K. & Robinson‐Pant, A. (2010) Compare: exploring a 40‐year journey through comparative education and international development, Compare: A Journal of Comparative and International Education, 40:6, 693-710

Bray, M. (2010) Comparative education and international education in the history of Compare: boundaries, overlaps and ambiguities, Compare: A Journal of Comparative and International Education, 40:6, 711-725

The deadline for submissions is 31st July 2019.
